India's benchmark indices ended almost unchanged on Tuesday, October 27, as elevated crude-oil prices and caution ahead of the US Federal Reserve's policy decision capped gains, even as smaller stocks rallied.

The Sensex closed at about 73,599, down 8 points, and the Nifty 50 settled at 22,749.75, down 3.45 points, according to Business Standard. The Nifty Midcap 100 rose about 1% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 gained about 2.7%.

Sectors and stocks

The Nifty Media index led with a gain of about 3.6%, followed by pharma, consumer durables and realty. Private banks and financial services were the weakest, with the Nifty Bank down 0.7%. Among Sensex stocks, Bharti Airtel, Trent, Maruti Suzuki, Power Grid and Eternal gained, while SBI, Axis Bank, TCS, Asian Paints and HDFC Bank declined.

Brent crude traded around $115 a barrel, and market commentary pointed to continued selling by foreign investors, offset by strong domestic flows. An analyst at LKP Securities placed Nifty support at 22,600 and resistance at 22,800.
