The Tamil Nadu government has revised auto-rickshaw fares for the first time since August 2013, raising the minimum fare to ₹50 for the first 1.8 km. The new fares were notified on October 27 in an extraordinary edition of the state gazette by the Home (Transport) Department.
Old and new fares
| Item | 2013 fare | New fare |
|---|---|---|
| First 1.8 km | ₹25 | ₹50 |
| Each additional km | ₹12 | ₹25 |
| Night travel (10 pm–5 am) | — | 1.5 times the fare |
| Waiting | — | ₹1 per minute |
| Ghat roads | — | ₹60 base, ₹30 per km |
The State Transport Authority and regional transport offices have been told to implement the rates under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The government said the revision followed sustained demands from drivers' unions and consultations with consumer organisations. The Madras High Court had directed the state in February 2022 to revise fares in line with rising costs.
Drivers' unions had sought a higher minimum fare, citing fuel, insurance and maintenance costs, while consumer groups pressed for affordable rates.
